Computer

Computer

$20.69

The pixelated rectangle we spend most of our day staring at in silence is not the television as many long feared, but the computer–the ubiquitous portal of work and personal lives. At this point, the computer is almost so common we don’t notice it in our view. It’s difficult to envision that not that long ago it was a gigantic, room-sized structure only to be accessed by a few inspiring as much awe and respect as fear and mystery. Now that the machine has decreased in size and increased in popular use, the computer has become a prosaic appliance, little-more noted than a toaster. These dramatic changes, from the daunting to the ordinary, are captured in "Computer" by design historian Paul Atkinson. Here, Atkinson chronicles the changes in physical design of the computer and shows how these changes in design are related to changes in popular attitude. Atkinson is fascinated by how the computer has been represented and promoted in advertising. For example, in contrast to ads from the 1970s and ’80s, today’s PC is very PC–genderless, and largely status free. "Computer" also considers the role of the computer as a cultural touchstone, as evidenced by its regular appearance in popular culture, including the iconography of the space age, HAL from "2001: A Space Odyssey," James Bond’s gadgetry, and Stars War and Star Trek. "Computer" covers many issues ignored by other histories of computing, which have focused on technology and the economics involved in their production, but rarely on the role of fashion in the physical design and promotion of computers and their general reception. The book will appeal to professionals and students of design and technology as well as those interested in the history of computers and how they have shaped–and been shaped by–our lives.

Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach

Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach

$5.29

This best-selling title, considered for over a decade to be essential reading for every serious student and practitioner of computer design, has been updated throughout to address the most important trends facing computer designers today. In this edition, the authors bring their trademark method of quantitative analysis not only to high performance desktop machine design, but also to the design of embedded and server systems. They have illustrated their principles with designs from all three of these domains, including examples from consumer electronics, multimedia and web technologies, and high performance computing. The book retains its highly rated features: Fallacies and Pitfalls, which share the hard-won lessons of real designers; Historical Perspectives, which provide a deeper look at computer design history; Putting it all Together, which present a design example that illustrates the principles of the chapter; Worked Examples, which challenge the reader to apply the concepts, theories and methods in smaller scale problems; and Cross-Cutting Issues, which show how the ideas covered in one chapter interact with those presented in others. In addition, a new feature, Another View, presents brief design examples in one of the three domains other than the one chosen for Putting It All Together. The authors present a new organization of the material as well, reducing the overlap with their other text, Computer Organization and Design: A Hardware/Software Approach 2/e, and offering more in-depth treatment of advanced topics in multithreading, instruction level parallelism, VLIW architectures, memory hierarchies, storage devices and networktechnologies. Also new to this edition, is the adoption of the MIPS 64 as the instruction set architecture. In addition to several online appendixes, two new appendixes will be printed in the book: one contains a complete review of the basic concepts of pipelining, the other provides solutions a selection of the exercises. Both will be invaluable to the student or professional learning on her own or in the classroom. Hennessy and Patterson continue to focus on fundamental techniques for designing real machines and for maximizing their cost/performance. * Presents state-of-the-art design examples including: * IA-64 architecture and its first implementation, the Itanium * Pipeline designs for Pentium III and Pentium IV * The cluster that runs the Google search engine * EMC storage systems and their performance * Sony Playstation 2 * Infiniband, a new storage area and system area network * SunFire 6800 multiprocessor server and its processor the UltraSPARC III * Trimedia TM32 media processor and the Transmeta Crusoe processor * Examines quantitative performance analysis in the commercial server market and the embedded market, as well as the traditional desktop market. Digital Design and Computer Architecture

$97.43

"Digital Design and Computer Architecture" is designed for courses that combine digital logic design with computer organization/architecture or that teach these subjects as a two-course sequence. "Digital Design and Computer Architecture" begins with a modern approach by rigorously covering the fundamentals of digital logic design and then introducing Hardware Description Languages (HDLs). Featuring examples of the two most widely-used HDLs, VHDL and Verilog, the first half of the text prepares the reader for what follows in the second: the design of a MIPS Processor. By the end of Digital Design and Computer Architecture, readers will be able to build their own microprocessor and will have a top-to-bottom understanding of how it works–even if they have no formal background in design or architecture beyond an introductory class. David Harris and Sarah Harris combine an engaging and humorous writing style with an updated and hands-on approach to digital design. -Unique presentation of digital logic design from the perspective of computer architecture using a real instruction set, MIPS. -Side-by-side examples of the two most prominent Hardware Design Languages–VHDL and Verilog–illustrate and compare the ways the each can be used in the design of digital systems. -Worked examples conclude each section to enhance the reader’s understanding and retention of the material. -Companion Web site includes links to CAD tools for FPGA design from Synplicity and Xilinx, lecture slides, laboratory projects, and solutions to exercises.

Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach, Second Edition

Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach, Second Edition

$3.94

"Once in a great while, a landmark computer-science book is published. Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach, Second Edition, is such a book. In an era of fluff computer books that are, quite properly, remaindered within weeks of publication, this book will stand the test of time, becoming lovingly dog-eared in the hands of anyone who designs computers or has concerns about the performance of computer programs." – Robert Bernecky, "Dr. Dobb’s Journal," April 1998 "Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach was the first book to focus on computer architecture as a modern science. Its publication in 1990 inspired a new approach to studying and understanding computer design. Now, the second edition explores the next generation of architectures and design techniques with view to the future. A basis for modern computer architecture As the authors explain in their preface to the Second Edition, computer architecture itself has undergone significant change since 1990. Concentrating on currently predominant and emerging commercial systems, the Hennessy and Patterson have prepared entirely new chapters covering additional advanced topics: * Advanced Pipelining: A new chapter emphasizes superscalar and multiple issues. * Networks: A new chapter examines in depth the design issues for small and large shared-memory multiprocessors. * Storage Systems: Expanded presentation includes coverage of I/O performance measures. * Memory: Expanded coverage of caches and memory-hierarchy design addresses contemporary design issues. * Examples and Exercises: Completely revised on current architectures such as MIPS R4000, Intel 80×86 and Pentium, PowerPC, and HPPA-RISC. Distinctive presentation This book continues the style of the first edition, with revised sections on Fallacies and Pitfalls, Putting It All Together and Historical Perspective, and contains entirely new sections on Crosscutting Issues. The focus on fundamental techniques for designing real machines and the attention to maximizing cost/performance are crucial to both students and working professionals. Anyone involved in building computers, from palmtops to supercomputers, will profit from the expertise offered by Hennessy and Patterson.

Computer Systems Design and Architecture

Computer Systems Design and Architecture

$35.75

The authors take a "No Mysteries" approach to computer systems. They interrelate three different viewpoints to provide a unique understanding of the subject: the perspective of the logic designer, the assembly language programmer, and the computer architect. The book has up-to-the-minute coverage of the latest developments in microprocessors, including ALU, pipelining, memory hierarchy, networks and the Internet. And, rather than focusing on a single type of architecture, Heuring and Jordan examine both CISC and RISC models at the ISA level using the unambiguous language of RTN (Register Transfer Notation), allowing for a more in-depth appreciation of different machine structures and functions. The authors examine general purpose machine, machine languages, and digital logic, some real machines, processor design, processor design–advanced topics, computer arithmetic and the arithmetic unit, memory system design, input and output, peripheral devices, communications, networking and the Internet. For computer science and engineering professionals.

Computer-Aided Architectural Design

Computer-aided architectural design software programs are the repository of accurate and comprehensive records of buildings and are used by architects and architectural companies. The first program was installed back in the 1960’s, to help architects save time instead of drawing their blueprints. Computer-aided design also known as CAD was originally the type of program that architects used, but since CAD couldn’t offer all the tools that architects needed to complete a project, CAAD developed as a distinct class of software.

Design and Modeling for Computer Experiments

Design and Modeling for Computer Experiments

$98.95

Computer simulations based on mathematical models have become ubiquitous across the engineering disciplines and throughout the physical sciences. Successful use of a simulation model, however, requires careful interrogation of the model through systematic computer experiments. While specific theoretical/mathematical examinations of computer experiment design are available, those interested in applying proposed methodologies need a practical presentation and straightforward guidance on analyzing and interpreting experiment results. Written by authors with strong academic reputations and real-world practical experience, Design and Modeling for Computer Experiments is exactly the kind of treatment you need. The authors blend a sound, modern statistical approach with extensive engineering applications and clearly delineate the steps required to successfully model a problem and provide an analysis that will help find the solution. Part I introduces the design and modeling of computer experiments and the basic concepts used throughout the book. Part II focuses on the design of computer experiments. The authors present the most popular space-filling designs – like Latin hypercube sampling and its modifications and uniform design – including their definitions, properties, construction and related generating algorithms. Part III discusses the modeling of data from computer experiments. Here the authors present various modeling techniques and discuss model interpretation, including sensitivity analysis. An appendix reviews the statistics and mathematics concepts needed, and numerous examples clarify the techniques and their implementation. The complexity of real physical systems means that there is usually no simple analytic formula that sufficiently describes the phenomena. Useful both as a textbook and professional reference, this book presents the techniques you need to design and model computer experiments for practical problem solving.

The Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments.

The Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments.

$115.71

Simulation is extraordinarily powerful and the ability to experiment virtually is one of the most important benefits. If the computer simulation model is valid, experimentation and analysis with the model can lead to accurate real world results and conclusions. Results from computer simulation models are often fit by a mathematical model, which is used to make predictions at untried locations in the design space. Simulation models used in this regard require the determination of an appropriate and efficient experimental design technique. The design and analysis of computer simulation experiments both stochastic and deterministic is the broad topic of research in this dissertation. This dissertation consists of three distinct research contributions. First, a nonlinear model is developed to fit the relationship between the cycle time (CT) and throughput (TH) of parts routing through a simulated manufacturing facility. This model improves on previously suggested surrogate models. The suggested Doptimal design allows for the formulation of a design a priori to running simulation experiments, which was not previously possible. The next two contributions compare spacefilling designs for deterministic computer simulation models with respect to prediction variance for an assumed surrogate model. Two types of surrogate models are considered: high order polynomial models and Gaussian process models. The results indicate that the sphere packing design, in general has the lowest prediction variance when a high order polynomial model is the surrogate model. The Gaussian Process Integrated Mean Square Error (GP IMSE) design has the lowest prediction variance when a Gaussian Process model is the surrogate model. Design augmentation and sample size considerations are also presented. Computer Design System: System-On-Chip

Computer Design System: System-On-Chip

$62.09

The next generation of computer system designers will be less concerned about details of processors and memories, and more concerned about the elements of a system tailored to particular applications. These designers will have a fundamental knowledge of processors and other elements in the system, but the success of their design will depend on the skills in making system-level tradeoffs that optimize the cost, performance and other attributes to meet application requirements. This book provides a new treatment of computer system design, particularly for System-on-Chip (SOC), which addresses the issues mentioned above. It begins with a global introduction, from the high-level view to the lowest common denominator (the chip itself), then moves on to the three main building blocks of an SOC (processor, memory, and interconnect). Next is an overview of what makes SOC unique (its customization ability and the applications that drive it). The final chapter presents future challenges for system design and SOC possibilities.

Patterson and Hennessy’s Computer Organization and Design has long been recognized as an exceptionally thorough and reliable introduction to computer design. Now they’ve fully updated their classic and linked it even more systematically to real-world practice. You’ll now find “Real Stuff” sections in every chapter: from Google clusters to advanced pipelining, AMD’s Opteron memory hierarchy to recent innovations in Intel’s Pentium line. You’ll find new hardware coverage: FPGAs, HDL simulators, logic design conventions, and more. Plenty of new software coverage, too, from optimizing compilers to implementing object-oriented languages. The meat of the book remains as good as ever: detailed, accessible introductions to modern instruction sets, memory, storage, networking, multiprocessing, clustering, and more. How it all fits. Why it works as it does. Whether you’re primarily interested in hardware or software, this is the rock-solid grounding you’ll need to succeed. Bill Camarda, from the October 2007 Read Only

Digital Design and Computer ArchitectureSecond EditionDavid Money Harris and Sarah L. Harris”Harris and Harris have taken the popular pedagogy from Computer Organization and Design down to the next level of refinement, showing in detail how to build a MIPS microprocessor in both Verilog and VHDL. Given the exciting opportunity that students have to run large digital designs on modern FGPAs, the approach the authors take in this book is both informative and enlightening.”-David A. Patterson, University of California at Berkeley, Co-author of Computer Organization and Design Digital Design and Computer Architecture takes a unique and modern approach to digital design. Beginning with digital logic gates and progressing to the design of combinational and sequential circuits, Harris and Harris use these fundamental building blocks as the basis for what follows: the design of an actual MIPS processor. SystemVerilog and VHDL are integrated throughout the text in examples illustrating the methods and techniques for CAD-based circuit design. By the end of this book, readers will be able to build their own microprocessor and will have a top-to-bottom understanding of how it works. Harris and Harris have combined an engaging and humorous writing style with an updated and hands-on approach to digital design. This second edition has been updated with new content on I/O systems in the context of general purpose processors found in a PC as well as microcontrollers found almost everywhere. The new edition provides practical examples of how to interface with peripherals using RS232, SPI, motor control, interrupts, wireless, and analog-to-digital conversion. High-level descriptions of I/O interfaces found in PCs include USB, SDRAM, WiFi, PCI Express, and others. In addition to expanded and updated material throughout, SystemVerilog is now featured in the programming and code examples (replacing Verilog), alongside
