computer communication networks
How do computers communication across network infrastructure?

By sending packets of messages. There are different network topologies, or types. Meaning, depending on the type of network is how the packet gets sent around. One email message can be broken down to 10 packets, then rejoined at the other end. Each computer on a network gets a turn to send something. The computers all have unique id numbers, called MAC addresses. Machine access codes. Also, to be on the intenet or network, you need an IP address. The combination of the mac and ip is how your computer is identified in each packet.

Hope that helps. look up network topologies to see the different types.

Theories of Communication Networks

Theories of Communication Networks

$41.83

To date, most network research contains one or more of five major problems. First, it tends to be atheoretical, ignoring the various social theories that contain network implications. Second, it explores single levels of analysis rather than the multiple levels out of which most networks are comprised. Third, network analysis has employed very little the insights from contemporary complex systems analysis and computer simulations. Foruth, it typically uses descriptive rather than inferential statistics, thus robbing it of the ability to make claims about the larger universe of networks. Finally, almost all the research is static and cross-sectional rather than dynamic. Theories of Communication Networks presents solutions to all five problems. The authors develop a multitheoretical model that relates different social science theories with different network properties. This model is multilevel, providing a network decomposition that applies the various social theories to all network levels: individuals, dyads, triples, groups, and the entire network. The book then establishes a model from the perspective of complex adaptive systems and demonstrates how to use Blanche, an agent-based network computer simulation environment, to generate and test network theories and hypotheses. It presents recent developments in network statistical analysis, the p* family, which provides a basis for valid multilevel statistical inferences regarding networks. Finally, it shows how to relate communication networks to other networks, thus providing the basis in conjunction with computer simulations to study the emergence of dynamic organizational networks.

Smart Networks

Smart Networks

$289.95

Smart Networks comprises the proceedings of Smartnet2002, the seventh conference on Intelligence in Networks, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and organized by Working Group 6.7. It was held in Saariselk, Finland, in April 2002. The conference series closely reflects the developments in networking. Currently we are facing two conflicting trends: the increasing popularity of the Internet and the growth of mobile communications. The traditional Internet approach is to regard a network as a dummy pipe of bits and place all the intelligence in the enddevices. The traditional telecom approach is to regard the enddevices as dummy senders or receivers of bits and to put all the intelligence in the network. For fixedline access to the Internet using a powerful PC, the Internet approach is plausible. However, for a nomadic user, who sometimes accesses services through a fixedline Internet connection and, at other times, through a wireless connection using a restrictedcapability access device, the situation becomes intolerable. Intelligence needs to be distributed and partially replicated in enduser devices, access networks, and the core network. The presentations in this volume consider these new trends and cover three major topics: platform software, services, and protocols. The sessions on platform software address various aspects of software infrastructure in networks including objectorientation, components, agents, and plugandplay. The session on services includes interactive TV, group communication, and location awareness. The session on protocols discusses bandwidth brokers, authentication, and protocol testing. Handbook of Optimization in Complex Networks: Theory and Applications

Handbook of Optimization in Complex Networks: Theory and Applications

$178.76

Complex Social Networks is a newly emerging (hot) topic with applications in a variety of domains, such as communication networks, engineering networks, social networks, and biological networks. In the last decade, there has been an explosive growth of research on complex real-world networks, a theme that is becoming pervasive in many disciplines, ranging from mathematics and computer science to the social and biological sciences. Optimization of complex communication networks requires a deep understanding of the interplay between the dynamics of the physical network and the information dynamics within the network.Although there are a few books addressing social networks or complex networks, none of them has specially focused on the optimization perspective of studying these networks. This book provides the basic theory of complex networks with several new mathematical approaches and optimization techniques to design and analyze dynamic complex networks. A wide range of applications and optimization problems derived from research areas such as cellular and molecular chemistry, operations research, brain physiology, epidemiology, and ecology.

Analysis of Queueing Networks with Blocking

$364.83

Queueing network models have been widely applied as a powerful tool for modelling, performance evaluation, and prediction of discrete flow systems, such as computer systems, communication networks, production lines, and manufacturing systems. Queueing network models with finite capacity queues and blocking have been introduced and applied as even more realistic models of systems with finite capacity resources and with population constraints. In recent years, research in this field has grown rapidly. Analysis of Queueing Networks with Blocking introduces queueing network models with finite capacity and various types of blocking mechanisms. It gives a comprehensive definition of the analytical model underlying these blocking queueing networks. It surveys exact and approximate analytical solution methods and algorithms and their relevant properties. It also presents various application examples of queueing networks to model computer systems and communication networks. This book is organized in three parts. Part I introduces queueing networks with blocking and various application examples. Part II deals with exact and approximate analysis of queueing networks with blocking and the condition under which the various techniques can be applied. Part III presents a review of various properties of networks with blocking, describing several equivalence properties both between networks with and without blocking and between different blocking types. Approximate solution methods for the buffer allocation problem are presented. Retransmission (Data Networks)

Retransmission (Data Networks)

$100.37

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Retransmission is the resending of packets which have been either damaged or lost. It is a term that refers to one of the basic mechanisms used by protocols operating over a packet switched computer network to provide reliable communication (such as that provided by a reliable byte stream, for example TCP). Such networks are usually unreliable, meaning they offer no guarantees that they will not delay, damage, or lose packets, or deliver them out of order. Protocols which provide reliable communication over such networks use a combination of acknowledgments (i.e. an explicit receipt from the destination of the data), retransmission of missing and/or damaged packets (usually initiated by a timeout), and checksums to provide that reliability. Mimo Communication for Cellular Networks

Mimo Communication for Cellular Networks

$142.99

Multiple antenna (MIMO) techniques are an essential component of any contemporary wireless communication system because they can significantly improve the performance over conventional single-antenna links. While MIMO techniques are relatively well understood at the link level, the interaction of multiple MIMO links and their impact on performance at the system level necessitate fundamentally new investigations. We propose a book that investigates the theoretical foundations of MIMO networks consisting of multiple simultaneous MIMO links and applies these principles in the design of next-generation wireless networks. About ten years ago, the information theoretic foundations of MIMO techniques were developed and showed the promise of using multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver of a wireless link. An enormous amount of research ensued to develop practical techniques for achieving these promised gains. Within the last few years, the information theory community has again made significant breakthroughs, this time in the understanding of multiuser MIMO systems. Currently in industry, new wideband wireless standards, including EV-DO Rev C, UMTS LTE, and WiMax, are under development to meet the insatiable demands for high-rate, ubiquitous wireless services. For the first time, and for all of these standards, MIMO technology will play an integral role in meeting the aggressive performance requirements for increased data rates, decreased latency, and improved coverage. Motivated by the confluence of these two eventsa "the emergence of multiuser MIMO theory and the development of commercial MIMO-based systemsa "we propose to connect the two worlds with a book that combines theory and practice. This book would provide a systematic survey of MIMO systems, starting with a review of MIMO link-level techniques and conventional single-antenna system-level techniques, summarizing the latest results in multiuser MIMO systems and developments in cross-layer techniques, and applying these techniques to the analysis and design of both current and future packet-based wireless networks. In addition to providing theoretical results, the book would serve as a reference for practicing communication engineers by providing useful descriptions of spatial channel models and system simulation methodologies for MIMO networks

Computer networking is the engineering discipline concerned with communication between computer systems or devices. Networking, routers, routing protocols, and networking over the public Internet have their specifications defined in documents called RFCs. Computer networking is sometimes considered a subdiscipline of telecommunications, computer science, information technology and/or computer engineering. Computer networks rely heavily upon the theoretical and practical application of these scientific and engineering disciplines. There are three types of networks: 1.Internet. 2.Intranet. 3.Extranet. A computer network is any set of computers or devices connected to each other with the ability to exchange data. Computer Networks: A Systems Approach

$8.69

Computer Networks, 4E is the only introductory computer networking book written by authors who have had first-hand experience with many of the protocols discussed in the book, who have actually designed some of them as well, and who are still actively designing the computer networks today. This newly revised edition continues to provide an enduring, practical understanding of networks and their building blocks through rich, example-based instruction. The authors’ focus is on the why of network design, not just the specifications comprising today’s systems but how key technologies and protocols actually work in the real world to solve specific problems. The new edition makes less use of computer code to explain protocols than earlier editions. Moreover, this new edition shifts the focus somewhat higher in the protocol stack where there is generally more innovative and exciting work going on at the application and session layers than at the link and physical layers. * Completely updated with new sidebar discussions that cover the deployment status of protocols described in the book. * Addition of sizeable number of new exercises and solutions. * Downloadable Opnet network simulation software and lab experiments manual. * New and revised instructor support material, including Powerpoint slides, eps version of figures appearing in the text; sample exams; lecture notes; UNIX sockets programming assignments.

Optical Packet Access Protocols for Wdm Networks

Optical Packet Access Protocols for Wdm Networks

$237.38

The breathtaking success of the WDM technology in backbone networks also pushes the development and implementation of optical packetswitched WDM local and metropolitan area networks. Local and metropolitan area optical WDM networks are emerging as viable and costeffective solutions for many telecommunication operators and service providers who have to face an extremely growing bandwidth demand and expensive additional fiber installation costs. Thus, the strong need for the development of novel highspeed architectures and protocols for such networks arises. In Optical Packet Access Protocols for WDM Networks, different basic and novel medium access control (MAC) protocols for WDMbased LANs/MANs, typically belonging to the group of singlehop networks, are proposed and analyzed. Thereby, solutions for the direct and efficient support of distinct QualityofService (QoS) classes over the WDM transmission layer are provided. Besides a comprehensive overview on the stateoftheart photonic metro networks, highly dynamic reservationbased access protocols relying on the passivestar and the ring topology are presented while assuming the deployment of wavelengthtunable transceivers at the network nodes.Optical Packet Access Protocols for WDM Networks provides both a comprehensive survey on existing WDM local and metro lightwave systems and the design of novel highly efficient medium access control protocols with QoS support for such systems. Accordingly, this work is appropriate for communication and network engineers from both the academic and industrial world working in the field of optical communication networks, computer science, and communication engineering. Denial-of-Service (DoS) is a computer security problem that poses a serious challenge to trustworthiness of services deployed over computer networks. The aim of DoS attacks is to make services unavailable to legitimate users, and current network architectures allow easy-to-launch, hard-to-stop DoS attacks. Particularly challenging are the service-level DoS attacks, whereby the victim service is flooded with legitimate-like requests, and the jamming attack, in which wireless communication is blocked by malicious radio interference. These attacks are overwhelming even for massively-resourced services, and effective and efficient defenses are highly needed.;This work contributes a novel defense framework, which I call dodging, against service-level DoS and wireless jamming. Dodging has two components: (1) the careful assignment of servers to clients to achieve accurate and quick identification of service-level DoS attackers and (2) the continuous and unpredictable-to-attackers reconfiguration of the client-server assignment and the radio-channel mapping to withstand service-level and jamming DoS attacks. Dodging creates hard-to-evade baits, or traps, and dilutes the attack “fire power”. The traps identify the attackers when they violate the mapping function and even when they attack while correctly following the mapping function. Moreover, dodging keeps attackers “in the dark”, trying to follow the unpredictably changing mapping. They may hit a few times but lose “precious” time before they are identified and stopped.;Three dodging-based DoS defense algorithms are developed in this work. They are more resource-efficient than state-of-the-art DoS detection and mitigation techniques. Analysis Of Queueing Networks With Blocking

Analysis Of Queueing Networks With Blocking

$229
